IELTS Academic Review Tips for Speaking Part 3: Discussion

In order to successfully accomplish this speaking task, below are some academic review tips about the discussion component.

  • The IELTS examiner will lead the conversation by asking general questions that are related to the topic in the Speaking Part 2. Listen to the question and think about the structure of the question. Does the question ask your opinion about the topic or does it tell you to present some examples about the topic?
  • Stay calm and think about the answers to the questions. As you listen to your instructor, spot critical points about the question. This enables you to understand the main idea of the question.
  • Take your time. Don’t try to answer the question as quickly as possible. After the question was asked, pause for a few seconds to construct your answers properly. You can also ask the examiner to repeat the question if you have not heard it clearly.
  • Don’t give short answers. Make sure to elaborate your answers by providing some examples and arguments about the question. During your IELTS academic review preparation, practice answering questions on various topics such as education, politics, and others.
  • As much as possible, answer all the questions. If you don’t know how to answer a certain question, then buy some time by saying, “I haven’t really thought about that before, but in my opinion…”, then give your opinion about the question.
