Contrary to popular belief, taking your IELTS review classes at home is not always a walk in the park. You’d have to deal with home-based distractions (e.g., noisy housemates) and endure various body aches associated with sitting in one position for hours.

  1. Use a chair with great lumbar support

If you’re going to sit for extensive periods for your IELTS General Training classes, it’s vital that you use a chair with excellent lumbar (lower back) support. Here’s why:

  • It’ll help you maintain good posture.
  • It’ll reduce muscle tension in the spine.
  • It’ll stave off spine-related body aches (e.g., chronic back pain, etc.).

Can’t afford to get a chair with lumbar back support? Here are some simple tips to minimize lumbar stress.

  • If possible, use a chair with elbow supports. It’ll help minimize neck strain.
  • If your backrest is flat, use a small pillow to push your lower back forward slightly.
  • Don’t slouch. Make sure your back and buttocks are pressed against your chair for support.
  • Adjust your position so that your knees are bent at about a 90-degree angle.
  • Sit as close to the desk as possible, but at a reasonable distance from your computer. Make sure your device is at eye level.
  1. Keep everything you need within arm’s reach

This is essential in maximizing your IELTS online sessions. You don’t want to be that student who constantly interrupts the class to find a misplaced review material or get a glass of water. Here’s a list of things that you should keep near you during your IELTS General Training classes.

  • IELTS General Training printouts
  • Pens and paper – It’s better to write down your lecture notes on paper, instead of your computer’s notepad. It’ll help you improve your writing speed and multitasking skills for the IELTS listening and writing tests.
  • Pencils – In case your pens run out of ink.
  • A spare headset – In case the one you’re using malfunctions.
  • A jacket – In case the room you’re studying in gets too cold.
  • A water bottle – Preferably with lukewarm—not cold—water. Drinking warm or room temperature water improves blood circulation, enhances digestion, and soothes the throat.
  1. Let your house/room-mates know that you’re studying

You don’t want your housemate barging into your room while you’re in the middle of an IELTS General Training online session right? Use these tips to reduce housemate-related class disruptions.

  • Stick a “do not disturb” sign on your door.
  • Keep them in the loop of your IELTS review schedule.
  • Remind them to keep the noise down and not disturb you minutes before your online class starts.
  • If they’re out and you expect them to come home sometime in the middle of your session, text them. Don’t have load or data? Leave them a note someplace noticeable.
